Singapore won't act to cool property prices-radio
SINGAPORE, July 30 (Reuters) - Singapore will not intervene to curb its soaring property market, state radio reported on Monday quoting a government minister.

Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan said that the government would try to avoid interfering in the market, Radio 938 Live reported.

Some analysts have predicted that the government may introduce measures to dampen a roaring market, as happened just before the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis.

Mah said property prices in Singapore were still competitive compared to Hong Kong and Tokyo, and were well below the levels seen in the mid-90s.

Singapore's private home prices climbed 8.3 percent in the second quarter to the highest level in almost a decade, government data showed on Friday.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) data showed the price index for Singapore private residential homes rose to 147.8 in the April-June quarter, from 136.5 in the previous three-month period. The index is still some way off its all-time high of 181.4 which it reached in the second quarter of 1996.
